Created by and starring Lena Dunham, Girls is an HBO comedy-drama following a close group of twenty-somethings living in New York City.
Lena Dunham plays aspiring writer Hannah Horvath who gets a shock when her parents visit from East Lansing, Michigan, and announce they will no longer financially support her as they have done since her graduation from Oberlin College two years before. Left to her own devices in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, she navigates her twenties, making “one mistake at a time”.
Hannah is joined on her journey by her circle of friends. Allison Williams (Peter Pan) is Marnie Marie Michaels, Hannah’s best friend and former roommate at Oberlin College. Jemima Kirke plays Jessa Johansson, a bohemian and unpredictable world-traveler who returns at the start of the series to live with her cousin Shoshana, played by Zosia Mamet (The Kids Are Alright). Hannah’s on and off boyfriend Adam Sackler, is played by Adam Driver (Lincoln, Inside Llewyn Davis) and Ray Karpovsky plays the other “boy friend” of the group, Ray Ploshansky. Hannah’s parents are veteran Peter Scolari and Becky Ann Baker, and guest/recurring characters have included Thomas-John played by Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, Thor), Evie Michaels played by Rita Wilson and a host of others including Michael Imperioli, Judy Collins, Felicity Jones, Patrick Wilson, Rosanna Arquette, Richard Masur, Louise Lasser, Patti LuPone and many more.
