Rip Goes Full Selfish

The latest DC’s Legends of Tomorrow episode—“River of Time”—was a very Vandal Savage-centric episode which gave the villain a great opportunity to show off his deliciously despicable nature and trade some quips with our protagonists. Our After Show hosts—Jack Hind, Tatiana Mariesa, and Rory Ross—take us through their favorite moments and some speculations on what might happen in the final two episodes of this season. So let’s get started …

Tatiana Called It

Tatiana gave us a big fat “I told you so!” after this episode. Why? Two words: “Rip Hunter.” Since the start of the season, Tatiana has been Team Anti-Rip due to the character’s hypocritical nature, and his proclivity to hide things from his team for his own selfish needs. Nothing could be more true than what was exhibited in this episode … except, that he kind of learned from his mistakes. But we’ll get into that in a short bit. Let’s first cover how—Tatiana so eloquently put it—“Rip is an a__hole.”

First, the man sent Jax down into the engine room to fix the time-drive, knowing full well that there was a risk of coming into contact with temporal radiation. Yep, sounds pretty a__holish to me. Soon, Jax started suffering from the effects of this exposure—advanced aging. Like what Tatiana said, “That’s even more horrible than death!” What really enraged her was Rip actually questioning the morality of the whole situation. And to that, she gave him a new colorful title: “Rip is a [fill in the blank with the name of the object used for feminine hygiene + the word ‘bag’].” However, I would like to point out that to make the name sting a little more, Tatiana should replace “bag” with “nozzle” since a bag remains outside of the body.

Rip did, at the end, have a small arc (something Tatiana visually demonstrated with the drawing of a semi-circle with her hands). He understood the errors in his ways and attempted to make things right. That still wasn’t satisfactory to our host because she knew that Rip has been “subconsciously lying to the team this whole time.” As for the final two episodes, let’s see how fast these lessons stick for Rip.

Team Savage?

The beauty of having an episode revolve around one character is that you get to see how other characters revolve around him. Vandal Savage spent most of this episode in a cage, but he accomplished more than someone who was free. As dastardly as this villain is, he’s definitely mesmerizing and charming, and can get anyone on his side. As is the case with Tatiana. She may not be Team Rip, but she is teetering on Team Savage! Jack, though, did make some great calls as to how each of our heroes was going to react to Savage’s subterfuge.

We saw Vandal Savage play mind games with each of our Legends and attempt to manipulate each one to his needs. There were two that he very much failed at though: Sara and Martin. Let’s talk about Sara for a second. This is a seasoned former member of the League of Assassins. How far did our main baddie think he could get with her? And Martin, the man with all the smarts … and the mileage to go with it. It was because of Savage’s incessant yapping that allowed Martin to figure out how to save Jax—by transporting him back to 2016 via the use of the jumpship.

The one individual who completely played into Savage’s game was Ray—not surprisingly. The man was lured into Savage’s cell which gave our bad guy the opportunity to escape. I was literally screaming at my monitor when Ray gave in. I had hoped that the writers were going to circumvent our expectations and give Ray a hidden plan—one where Vandal actually had the false assurance that he himself was getting the advantage. But this is Ray we’re talking about, and with one mention of Kendra, the man couild be played like a fiddle. Jack, already familiar with Ray’s gullibility, saw it from a mile away.

More One-Liners Than a 1980s Movie

One of the best things about “River of Time” was the slew of colorful one-liners being traded. Here are the favorites of our hosts:

Tatiana: “I’d tell you to go to hell, but you’d probably enjoy it there.”—Sara Lance, “And how’s that working out for you, Ghandi?”—Mick Rory

Rory: “You may be a Time Master, but I am a Master of Time.”—Vandal Savage, “Why are all the snacks sugar-free!?”—Mick Rory

Jack: “Vandal Savage, Destroyer of Empires”—Vandal Savage quickly followed by “Leonard Snart, Robber of ATMs”—Leonard Snart

My personal favorite was also Jack’s. Leonard just has that panache for words.

Predictions

We’re getting to the final round of episodes for the season. So like the rest of the fans out there, our After Show team has their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the Legends … okay, maybe not all of them are hopes. Let’s see what they are …

Rory thinks that Martin will die. Like I said, not all of them are hopes. Even if he does die, it will most likely be a cliffhanger. Jack makes a great point that Firestorm is the team’s most powerful weapon, so taking Martin out will probably be a way of handicapping the Legends … or how fans would say, “Nerfing them a bit.”

As for Vandal Savage working for the Time Masters, Jack thinks that Savage could’ve been a Chronos-like figure for them. If not that, Savage is definitely some sort of secret weapon. Jack was quite surprised that the Time Masters were in cahoots with Vandal. However, I had an inkling that something wasn’t right when Time Master Druce was present. That guy already tried to arrest Rip once and also wanted to eradicate the team.

What did you think of “River of Time”? What were your favorite one-liners? And what do you think will transpire in the final two episodes of Season 1? Jack, Tatiana, Rory, and I want to hear your thoughts, so sound off in the comments!
