The Weekly Comet hosts Tamara Conniff and Jonathan McHugh present an exclusive performance with singer/songwriter Rodriguez, who is the subject of the Oscar winning “Searching for Sugar Man.”

Sixto Rodriguez’ story is truly inspirational. A native of Detroit, in the 1970s he recorded two albums which went largely unnoticed in the U.S. He hung up his guitar and went to work in construction for 30 years. However, unbeknownst to Rodriguez his albums gained popularity internationally, going platinum in South Africa and becoming the anthem of resistance in the Apartheid-era. Director Malik Bendjelloul’s “Searching for Sugar Man” chronicles the journey of two fans on a mission to find out what had happened to Rodriguez, who was rumored to have committed suicide. Rodriguez performs his world famous hit “Sugar man”

Lyrics:

Sugar man, won’t you hurry
‘Cause I’m tired of these scenes
For a blue coin won’t you bring back
All those colors to my dreams
Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane

Sugar man met a false friend
On a lonely dusty road
Lost my heart when I found it
It had turned to dead black coal.
Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane

Sugar man you’re the answer
That makes my questions disappear
Sugar man ’cause I’m weary
Of those double games l hear

Sugar man
Sugar man
Sugar man
