Empire centers around a hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Enterprises, and the drama among the members of the founders’ family as they fight for control of the company. The hour-long family drama was created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, and stars Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon and Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon. Howard and Henson previously starred together as love interests in the film Hustle & Flow.

Terrence Howard, as Lucious Lyon, is a former drug dealer turned hip hop mogul and the CEO of Empire Entertainment. Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon, is Lucious’ outspoken ex-wife and mother of his three sons, who served a 17-year stretch in prison for drug dealing. Trai Byers as Andre Lyon, is the eldest son of the Lyon family and CFO of Empire Entertainment. He is Wharton educated, power hungry, bi-polar and married to his white college sweetheart, Rhonda. Jussie Smollett plays Jamal Lyon, the middle son and black sheep of the Lyon family, a talented, gay singer-songwriter who despises the corporate aspect of the music industry and is estranged from his homophobic father. Bryshere Y. Gray is Hakeem Lyon, the fame-obsessed youngest son and Lucious’ favorite child, who is a hip hop star on the rise. Grace Gealey is Anika Calhoun, head of Empire Entertainment A&R and Lucious’ fiancé who Cookie refers to as Kitty Boo Boo. Naomi Campbell, Macy Gray, Courtney Love, Tasha Smith, Judd Nelson, Ta’Rhonda Jones and Gabourey Sidibe round out the cast.
Music for the show is handled by Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley. Known for scoring hits with some of pops biggest artists including Madonna, Brandy and Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z and Aaliyah. Timbaland takes his cue from the writing team who gives him an idea of where the plot is headed, and crafts songs to fit those themes.
